Eteng Jonah Williams (2nd left) His Excellency Chief Clement Ebri (CON) (1st right) Hon Bassey Ina Ibor. AS MKPANI CHIEFTAINCY CRISIS FINALLY RESOLVED: My Message to the People. By HRH Obol Sunday Obono Okoi (Obol Lopon of Mkpani) All hail Mkpani people! Their understanding of conflict as a social necessity, a normal and functional and indeed an inevitable aspect of the healthy functioning of all societies; and also as an obstacle to progress, political stability, economic prosperity and overall socio-economic development because of its destructive impact rightly informed the resolution of this chieftaincy crisis in the community. Some of us may recall that, some few months ago, the traditional rulership system in Mkpani that has existed for over three decades was nearly distorted by some self-serving individuals and eventually thrown the people into the state of confusion. However, this confusion did not last without it effects on the people. Infact, I have continued to reflect on whether it was a short-sighted idea for our fore bearers to had worked relentlessly toward a united community where the inhabitants will be better disposed to realize their aspirations. This is more given the disconcerting signals that constantly challenge our collective will to live together. There is no doubt in my mind that, the immediate captaincy feud and its attendant’s reactions challenge this idea. My dear people, it is on this premise that, I have to salute all the high-minded men in Mkpani who showed concern with the happiness of the community by their dogged determination to the final resolution of the crisis. Mkpani is the land of promise where positive things shall continue to take place for the good of the people. At this point in our history, we have the choice either to show maturity and progress or submit to unpatriotic impulses and stagnate. We must close ranks to work to attain greatness. I strongly believe there is enormous strength and remarkable resilience in our land and our people all round. But clearly, these are difficult times in the life of our community. As the new journey begins, I must state that the core value is service. Let me re-affirm that, with passion and patriotism, my leadership shall prove to match the hopes and aspirations of our great community. I will continue to demonstrate leadership, statesmanship, vision, capacity and sacrifice to transform our traditional institution and community. We must as a community strengthen common grounds, develop new areas of understanding and collaboration and seek fresh ideas that will enrich our community consensus. I will continue to be transparent, fair as well as ensure equity and justice in the affairs of the land. My reign as it is focused and calm will continue to be resolute in its determination of issues that bothers Mkpani, Yakurr and the rest of the world. As I pledged to make a mark in my time, when I die, Mkpani as it is would continue to be, because each man beside what he owes to himself owes to humanity whatever he can contribute in search for truth and wisdom. Let me repeat that, core value is service.
